Security in the Caribbean — St. Barts, Mustique, Barbados and the Island UHNW Circuit

The Caribbean high season — December through April — concentrates more UHNW wealth in a smaller geographic area than almost any other annual period outside of Davos or Monaco Yacht Show. St. Barts, Mustique, Barbados, Antigua, the British Virgin Islands, and the Turks and Caicos receive a rotating cast of principals who regard the islands as genuinely off-duty environments and make security decisions accordingly. The islands are not dangerous in the way that certain urban environments are dangerous. They are operationally complex in ways that are frequently underestimated.

St. Barts: the access constraint

St. Barts' airport runway is 650 metres long and can only accept light aircraft of specific types. Principals arriving by larger jet must transit through St. Maarten, creating a planned vulnerability at an airport where FFGR cannot control the environment. We brief principals on St. Maarten transit specifically: the transit area is accessible to individuals with general airport access, vehicle staging at the STMA arrival hall is immediately adjacent to a public road, and the boat transfer from Oyster Pond to Gustavia requires forty minutes of open water travel in a vessel that is not screened. For any principal with an elevated threat profile, we recommend arriving at Gustavia by helicopter direct from St. Maarten, rather than by boat, to eliminate the exposed water transit.

Mustique: the compound logic and its limits

Mustique is a private island with controlled access, and principals often use this fact as a reason to reduce their protection posture to near zero. The island's status as private does limit the range of actors who can access it through legitimate channels. It does not limit access by sea — the coastline is extensive and unpatrolled through most of the night. The island's medical facility is a small clinic; serious medical emergencies require helicopter evacuation to Barbados with a transit time of thirty to forty-five minutes. A principal with any condition that could deteriorate rapidly should have a FFGR-certified paramedic as part of their team on Mustique, regardless of how comfortable the security environment feels.

Barbados: the party villa problem

Barbados concentrates UHNW principals in Platinum Coast villas that are large, well-staffed, and socially active. The social calendar during January and February typically involves multiple principals visiting each other's properties. Each visit creates a vehicle movement that is observable from the road, an arrival that is observable from neighbouring properties, and a gathering that involves the mixing of multiple principals' security teams — or, more commonly, no security teams at all. The vehicle theft and residential burglary rate in the St. James and St. Peter areas, which host most of the platinum coast properties, is higher than the island's overall statistics suggest to first-time visitors.

Communications and emergency response planning

Every Caribbean mandate requires a communications and emergency response plan that the team builds before the principal arrives. The plan covers: local emergency services contacts (police, fire, coast guard, medical evacuation), hospital capability assessment, helicopter evacuation providers, boat extraction routes if the primary road route is blocked, and the FFGR operations centre contact protocol for real-time support. Caribbean cellular networks are variable — FFGR teams operate on satellite communications as a backup in all island environments where the cellular network cannot be relied upon. The principal's chief of staff receives a condensed emergency card covering the top five scenarios and the response for each.
