Each January, a Swiss alpine valley of 11,000 residents temporarily hosts 3,000 of the world's most senior decision-makers. The World Economic Forum 2027 annual meeting will run from 19 to 23 January 2027 — the most operationally constrained UHNW security environment in Europe, and arguably the world.
We have deployed close protection at Davos every year since 2014. The pattern we have learned is consistent: Davos rewards advance preparation, and punishes late commitment, more aggressively than any other UHNW event on the calendar. This playbook is written for the family office preparing for Davos 2027 — ideally between October and early December 2026.
Why Davos is operationally unique
The A28 reality
Davos is accessible by a single principal road: the A28 highway, branching off the A13 at Landquart. During WEF week, the A28 operates under restricted access. Vehicles require accreditation. Convoys are paced by Swiss police. Snow conditions can close the road for 6-24 hours at peak storms. Every Davos itinerary requires a road plan AND a helicopter contingency.
Hotel scarcity
Davos hotel inventory is fully booked twelve months ahead by WEF accreditation. The Belvédère, the Steigenberger, the Hard Rock, the Schatzalp — all allocated by July of the year before. For UHNW principals without a WEF-allocated hotel, the working solution is the satellite chalet model: rented residences in Klosters, with continuous transport into Davos for programme commitments.
The Kongresszentrum perimeter
The Swiss Federal Police operates a tight security perimeter around the Kongresszentrum during WEF. Security details require separate accreditation that must be applied for in November for the following January. Our team handles this routinely — but the deadline is genuine.
The off-Forum programme
Most UHNW Davos exposure is in the off-Forum programme: bilateral dinners at the Belvédère, private receptions at the Schatzalp, breakfast meetings at the Hard Rock, brand activations on the Promenade. Securing the off-Forum programme requires venue advance for each location. This is where 90% of our operational complexity sits during Davos.
Pre-event preparation
The Davos timeline — start in October
For a January 2027 deployment, our standard timeline: October — engagement confirmed, accommodation locked, aviation modality decided. November — Kongresszentrum accreditations submitted, chalet security audits, helicopter contingency confirmed. December — threat picture finalized, itinerary day-by-day mapped, full team briefed. FFGR Davos booking window closes 15 December 2026.
The aviation strategy
Three arrival modalities: (A) Zurich ZRH + A28 ground transfer (2-2.5 hours, 25% weather risk); (B) Zurich + helicopter to Davos heliport (35-45 min, 30% weather rejection risk in January); (C) Direct Engadin/St. Moritz airport + short transfer. Our advice: book both a road plan AND a helicopter slot. Cost premium is moderate. Operational redundancy is essential.
Show-week protocols
Chalet-side dispositif
For principals based in Klosters or Wolfgang: one officer permanently on-site (24/7 rotation), one officer at the perimeter, vehicle staged at the chalet during programme commitments, and satellite communication backup (chalets often have weak mobile coverage). Morning departure from chalet to Davos is 10-15 minutes in fair weather, 30-40 in snow.
The evening window in Davos
WEF evenings are highly structured private events. Our officers accompany the principal to and from each venue, coordinate with venue security on arrival protocols, maintain a position inside the dinner venue, and manage extraction timing. Post-dinner movements after 10pm are the highest-exposure moments of the day — the combination of alcohol, reduced police presence, and media opportunism creates a distinct risk window.
Post-Davos extraction
Friday 23 January is the most complex day of the week. Three thousand principals leaving simultaneously through one airport (ZRH), one helicopter company (mainly), and one road. Private aviation slots at Zurich for Friday 23 January are pre-booked by mid-October. Our protocol: extraction brief on Thursday evening, vehicle pre-positioned at 6am Friday, officer with the principal from room to aircraft door.
